We have had another wonderful week of learning here in the GT classroom! All of the GT cuties are invested deeply in their learning, and it is such a joy to work with them :-)
1st grade: The 1st graders did The 30 Circle Challenge this week. This is an exercise in creative fluency. Students are given a paper that has 30 identically sized circles on it. The circles are empty, and the students are tasked with turning as many of them as they can into something that is recognizable. On the first day we did this challenge the students were given three minutes. Then, on the second day they were given an additional seven minutes. Each one of them put their mind through an intense workout in this fun and challenging exercise! 2nd grade: We completed the Mancala tournament this week. Congratulations to Kyle the winner of the tournament! All of the players put forth her best effort and the competition was stiff. We plan to do this again in the near future. The students resumed the marble run challenge this week. They review the plans they had made before winter break, and generated a very detailed materials list for the project. Next week they will begin building their marble runs. 3rd & 4th grade: Both third and fourth graders participated in the Snowman Stretch activity this week. They were given five pieces of blank paper, 1 foot of scotch tape, and a pair of scissors. Their task was to build the tallest snowman they could in a given amount of time. The snowman had to have three different distinct tiers. The snowman they build also has to be freestanding. After some research, trial, and error the students were able to create very unique snowmen. They will also decorate these creations next week. Will be sure to email you a picture of the snowman they create. 5th grade: The fifth graders completed their story ideas for the district’s movie competition this week. Each student created their own idea and presented it to their classmates. They had to tell the setting, characters, conflict, resolution, and how they would include the other details of the contest in their story pitch. The class then voted upon their top two favorite ideas. Congratulations to Emma and Keyen for having their stories voted upon to create into movies! Next week we will begin the movie production process. GT classes resumed this week, and it felt great to be back together! In keeping with our long-standing tradition we played Two Truths and a Lie. This game teaches us more about what everyone was up to over the break and it gives us a chance to have fun trying to trick each other too. After we finished playing it was time to get to work!
First grade: We welcomed a new member to our class this week. We are delighted to have Anvi join us! We taught Anvi how to play our favorite game, SET. Every one of the GT cuties loves this game, and I encourage you to get the app at home so that they can practice and hone their skills. The app has several different versions of the game and it is great for beginners and experts! Second grade: The second grade GT cuties enjoyed playing in a Mancala tournament this week. Every student will play every other student in a round robin style tournament. Upon completion of these games the student with the highest point total will win. We will complete this exciting tournament next week. Third Grade:Our class welcomed a new member this week, Sage. She is off to a wonderful start learning the ins and outs of the GT classroom. The third graders begin a challenge this week called The Snowman Stretch. It is the same challenge that the fourth graders are taking on. Fourth grade:The Snowman Stretch requires people to use both critical and creative thinking. The challenge is to use five pieces of paper, 12 inches of scotch tape, and a pair of scissors to build a three tiered snowman. The snowman must be freestanding and the goal is to get it as tall as possible. This week the third and fourth graders experimented with different ideas that may be useful during the challenge. Next week they will build and then decorate their snowman. Fifth grade: Our class is going to compete in the annual Festival de Eanes film contest J Soon we will look at the details of the contest and focus on the logistics a bit more. But the very first step in this contest is writing a story. So this week the GT cutie started writing a story of their own in hopes that it will be chosen by their classmates to turn into a script and then a movie. It is our hope that next week we will share the stories and then vote upon the two that will be turned into films.
