The map shown above is proudly displayed in the GT classroom. But, our collection is not complete!
Our class is collecting quarters and we need your help! The America the Beautiful Quarters are a series of quarters issued by the United States Mint starting in 2010 and scheduled to continue until at least 2021. The front of all the coins depicts George Washington in a modified version of the portrait used for the original 1932 Washington quarter. There will be five new reverse (back) designs each year (one in 2021), each depicting a national park or national site – one from each state, the federal district, and each territory. The map shown above is proudly displayed in the GT classroom. But, our collection is not complete! We hope that all of the GT families will help us in our pursuit of the coins we still need! When you find one please send it in with your GT cutie! The student will get the honor of signing their name on the map underneath the place their quarter is placed. They will then get to keep the cardboard quarter that held that place. So, won't you please help us complete our collection?

The Kindergarten GT cuties took on a mental challenge this week! They learned about tangrams, and they used strong critical thinking while trying to solve several puzzles. First, they used the Tanzen App. It contains multiple puzzles that use the seven tangram pieces. Next, they got their hands on real 3D tangrams! This part was pretty challenging for them - there is no "Hint" button in real life! They had to use perseverance and problem solving skills to attempt to make a square out of all seven pieces. The 1st grade students are having a blast creating mobiles out of straws, string, beads, and paper. They have had to use strong creative and critical thinking along the way. The mobiles aren't finished yet, but don't they look great so far! Here are the 2nd grade GT cuties working diligently on their new project. Each one of them is designing their own board game. They started by choosing a theme for their game. Next, they made a sketch of the game board. There are a lot of decisions that go into creating a game and a lot of creative thinking too! The 3rd graders are building a Kicking Machine for their new project. The machine must kick a ping pong ball into a cup. They began by making a design and a plan for their machine. Once building began the cuties realized that they will have to adapt their plan a lot along the way! The Great Paper Airplane Contest is underway! There are two groups, or companies, in our class. Above you can see them busily designing their company poster. Each company elected a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Marketing Director. They had to come up with a logo and a slogan for their company too! The 5th grade cuties are doing a wonderful job making movies for the district's film contest! Above you can see them acting and filming each other. They are extremely dedicated to the project, and they are working efficiently and very well together!
Kindergarten: What a pleasure it is to welcome our brand new class of kindergartners! This week the new GT students began their journey in our class, and they did so with enthusiasm, effort, and sweetness :-) They will be attending GT class Mondays through Thursdays from 9:45 - 10:15. This week they worked on a self-portrait that highlights their interests. They also learned a new app called TanZen which involves lots of challenging Tangram puzzles. Next week we will finish up the self-portraits and delve deeper into tangrams.
1st – 5th grade: This week the GT students completed a self-report for the third nine weeks. Each student took time to reflect upon their performance in class over the past quarter. They rated themselves in different behavioral and learning skills. Next Thursday I will send these reports home along with the teacher report that I have completed for each student. It will come to you in their GT folder. Please read the reports and send back the form indicating that you received them. You should keep both the student and teacher reports. Due to the musical each grade level missed at least one day a GT this week. So we ended up having only one or two days to continue working on projects. Next week I will give you a full update on each grade level’s project progress. Thanks to all of you for attending Open House last week! It was wonderful to have you in our classroom, and the GT cuties were glowing with pride as they shared their work with you!
Here is an update of what we’ve been learning this week. First grade: This week the 1st grade cuties began designing a mobile. This mobile will be made out of straws, paper, string, and beads. The students are extremely excited about this project, and they are taking it very seriously! The first step, which is almost complete, is to prepare a bunch of shapes made out of paper. Next week the students will begin assembling their mobiles. Second grade: This was the final week for building marble runs. The 2nd grade cuties really got into this project! It was fun to see all the varieties of ideas that stemmed from the same set of materials. Each and every student should be proud of the marble runs they created. They should also be proud of their teamwork during the Hot Chocolate River game that we played this week. They had a big problem to solve together and it wasn’t easy, but they persevered and communicated their way to success :-) Third Grade: It’s all about candy carriages in third grade GT. These cuties are really going above and beyond in order to create a carriage that will safely transport to glue sticks down the ramp. They have tested and redesigned several times, and next week will be the official testing week for their carriage. Fourth grade:This week fourth grade GT cuties began in a project called The Great Paper Airplane Factory. In this project the students will work in groups, or companies, to build and test a variety of paper airplanes. The project will culminate in a contest to which parents will be invited. The contest will consist of six separate categories including: longest flight duration, longest flight in feet and inches, precision flying, aerobatics, best design and most beautifully decorated. This week they form their companies, and next week they will begin planning for the auction during which plane making materials will be sold. Fifth grade: The fifth grade students have done a super job writing a script for their movie. Next week they will begin filming the different scenes that make up their movie. Each group will rely upon their own members, as well as members of the other group, to act out the different scenes for their movie. They are working together beautifully, and I can’t wait to see the results! |
