1st grade: The 1st graders did The 30 Circle Challenge this week. This is an exercise in creative fluency. Students are given a paper that has 30 identically sized circles on it. The circles are empty, and the students are tasked with turning as many of them as they can into something that is recognizable. On the first day we did this challenge the students were given three minutes. Then, on the second day they were given an additional seven minutes. Each one of them put their mind through an intense workout in this fun and challenging exercise!
2nd grade: We completed the Mancala tournament this week. Congratulations to Kyle the winner of the tournament! All of the players put forth her best effort and the competition was stiff. We plan to do this again in the near future. The students resumed the marble run challenge this week. They review the plans they had made before winter break, and generated a very detailed materials list for the project. Next week they will begin building their marble runs.
3rd & 4th grade: Both third and fourth graders participated in the Snowman Stretch activity this week. They were given five pieces of blank paper, 1 foot of scotch tape, and a pair of scissors. Their task was to build the tallest snowman they could in a given amount of time. The snowman had to have three different distinct tiers. The snowman they build also has to be freestanding. After some research, trial, and error the students were able to create very unique snowmen. They will also decorate these creations next week. Will be sure to email you a picture of the snowman they create.
5th grade: The fifth graders completed their story ideas for the district’s movie competition this week. Each student created their own idea and presented it to their classmates. They had to tell the setting, characters, conflict, resolution, and how they would include the other details of the contest in their story pitch. The class then voted upon their top two favorite ideas. Congratulations to Emma and Keyen for having their stories voted upon to create into movies! Next week we will begin the movie production process.
