The GT cuties from all grade levels are collecting quarters from the National Parks Quarter Program. Pictured above is our class' quarter collection map. We currently have many of the released quarters. This series began in 2010 and will go through 2021. It is our hope to find them all! The quarters we are in need of are pictured below. Won't you please help us find them?!?!
When young people work together to accomplish a common goal they learn important lessons about compromise, patience, and perseverance. No matter what grade level or project the GT cuties are in at this time, they are all using cooperation to improve their projects and themselves.
The first graders are learning how to use KNEX pieces. They will be working as one team to build a bridge out of the KNEX kit next week. They have used cooperation as they shared tips and hints they picked up while learning how the pieces interlock and separate. Second graders are making their own board games. Each student is producing their own game, but they use cooperation to test each other's games. The test is very important because it points out areas that may need improvement. The 2nd grade GT cuties love to help each other by testing games and giving advice afterwards that will help the game designer improve their work.
The 3rd grade cuties are exercising cooperation in a very active way! They have been working as a unit to build an impressively awesome KNEX roller coaster. Along the way they have had to solve many problems together. They have done so with great respect and patience with one another. The 4th graders just completed building a kicking machine. They worked in small groups to accomplish their goal of kicking a ping pong ball into a cup. Each step of the project demanded strong communication and cooperation. These students are able to really hear their teammates and put the ideas of others into practice.
The 5th grade GT cuties are doing a fabulous job creating multi-media presentations about a decade in American history. Each group has masterfully divided the tasks for the project, and they do a superior job of helping one another learn and grow!
All kids can benefit from cooperating with a group. When our gifted kids get to work with others who possess similar mental abilities they are given the opportunity to teach and learn from each other. Here at BPE the GT cuties love to cooperate and encourage one another :-)
The GT cuties made good progress on their projects this week. That is because every single student is focused on achieving the project goal and dedicated to doing whatever it takes to meet that goal. The GT cuties are a driven bunch of learners - yet another reason why I am the luckiest teacher in the world!
Did you know that the cuties do a Warm Up activity each day they come to class? Since it is a part of their daily routine I wanted to explain it to you in more detail. Warm Up time usually lasts about 10 minutes. It serves several purposes:
A good conversation starter might be for you to ask your child what their favorite warm up activity is and why. Ask them what they wish they could practice more and help them get the game(s) so they can practice at home.
Every good workout starts with a solid warm up - even a workout for the brain :-)
This week we welcomed new students to our program :-). Each grade level added at least one student, and everyone is off to a great start. Since 5th grade did not come to GT at all this week, due to musical practicing and performing, they will meet their new classmates on Monday.
Students in grades 1-4 continued to work on their projects this week. 5th graders did not attend GT class this week because they had to practice and/or perform the musical.
In addition to working on projects the GT cuties also enjoyed 5th Day Free Day this week. Instead of writing in their journals they made a design. Here are the directions they got when they came to 5th Day Free Day:
There is a special challenge you will begin working on today, and it’s all about PUPPETS :-)
I'm excited to see all of the new puppets that your genius kids create!
